The Apostles' Creed
Background:
A creed is simply a statement of faith. The word derives from the Latin word "credo" which means "believe".
The Apostles' Creed is the earliest statement of the Christian belief and is widely used by Christians around the world. Even though it is called "The Apostles' Creed", it wasn't written by the Apostles' but more so taken from much of the New Testament which were written by the Apostles'.
The Apostles' Creed developed in conjunction with Baptism. As the water was applied, the question would be asked: "Do you believe in God the Father? God the Son? etc." Very quickly the answer developed into what we now call the Apostles' Creed. It is often called the baptismal creed.
The Apostles' Creed:
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the Life everlasting. Amen.
